Will Scania produce electric heavy-duty trucks in China by 2027?

According to related reports from China, Scania's Rugao manufacturing facility will begin producing battery-electric heavy-duty trucks by 2027. All relevant preparatory and deployment work is currently in an advanced stage of implementation.

As publicly documented, Scania formally signed the investment agreement for its pure electric heavy-duty truck project at the Rugao Economic and Technological Development Zone on May 14, 2026. The mass production initiative will take place at the Rugao Super Factory, representing a total investment of 2 billion euros—marking Scania's largest single overseas capital investment in nearly 70 years. According to the publicly disclosed roadmap, the Rugao production base will achieve scaled serial production of electric heavy-duty trucks in 2027, reaching the previously announced annual production capacity target of 10,000 units during this phase.

To date, Scania has launched proven, market-validated electric heavy-duty truck models, including the 40R and 45S, across global markets. Equipped with a high-capacity 624 kWh battery pack, these vehicles offer a full-load operating range of up to 440 kilometers and support 350 kW high-power DC fast charging. These established models have been designated as the primary candidates for initial local mass production at the Rugao plant in 2027.

The Rugao facility operates under a dual-product-line framework characterized by "global manufacturing standards combined with localized customization." Moving forward, Scania will further leverage the R&D strengths of China’s new energy industrial ecosystem to develop and launch fully localized electric heavy-duty truck models specifically designed for China’s long-haul trunk transportation scenarios.

As of now, Scania has not officially released the complete model lineup for the 2027 electric heavy-duty truck production at the Rugao plant. For final and authoritative details on the specifications of mass-produced vehicles, all parties are advised to refer to future official public announcements issued by Scania China.
