Scania China: Deep Localization in Product and Design, Creating a "Chinese Identity"

In March 2026, Scania China officially delivered its first batch of domestically produced NEXT ERA heavy-duty trucks, marking a pivotal milestone in its “In China, For China” strategy. This flagship model, specifically designed for the Chinese market, incorporates the aesthetic elements of China’s traditional ritual vessel, the into its exterior design. It is the first Scania truck worldwide to display the Chinese characters “斯堪尼亚” as its official brand logo, breaking the century-old tradition of using exclusively foreign-language visual identities.

The interior has been thoroughly redesigned to suit the habits of Chinese drivers. It features a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that support voice interaction and seamless integration with AutoNavi (Gaode Map). The steering column-mounted gear selector and one-touch start enhance operational convenience. The driver’s seat includes an 850mm-wide sleeping berth and a flat-floor layout, significantly improving comfort during long-haul rests. A multi-functional air-suspension seat effectively reduces vibration fatigue, providing ride quality comparable to premium passenger vehicles. In terms of safety, the cab complies with the European ECE-R29 crash standard and is equipped with an L2+ advanced driver assistance system, with reserved interfaces for future upgrades to higher-level autonomous driving. 

The NEXT ERA represents more than just import localization; it is a comprehensive redesign led by Scania China’s in-house R&D team. The powertrain has been optimized specifically for China’s long-haul logistics conditions, achieving a tested fuel consumption as low as 27 liters per 100 km—6 to 7 liters less than key competitors. Additionally, the lightweight body structure reduces weight by over 300 kg, directly improving payload efficiency. 

Scania China has evolved into the group’s first global full-function center, integrating R&D, manufacturing, sales, finance, and service within a unified structure. A local team of over 600 engineers now leads the development of the next-generation electric heavy-duty truck. The launch of the NEXT ERA is not merely the release of a new vehicle—it represents a landmark milestone in the transformation of foreign automakers from market entrants to cultural co-creators.
